National Trustees Week – Meet Trevor Edwards

The views and experience of our colleagues, volunteers and people who use our services help the Board of Trustees to have a good understanding of all areas of the organisation.

Over the summer, our Trustees spent time job shadowing teams across the charity, giving them the chance to hear first-hand from employees about what is impacting them and their work and to get a real understanding of the difference Havens Hospices makes to the lives of those we support.

This week is National Trustees Week, the perfect opportunity to introduce you to them and tell you about their experiences!

Here is Trevor Edward’s experience …

Trevor is an experienced finance and accounting professional with more than 25 years of combined experience in audit practice and industry. Trevor has always had a sense of ‘community’, having served as a parent governor and finance committee member at his daughters’ schools. He joined the board in 2023 as Treasurer, as he was very keen to contribute his professional experience to Havens Hospices and to give back in the memory of a close family member. Because of Trevor’s experience in finance, he wanted to experience something completely different, so spent time on the In Patient Unit at Fair Havens.

“As a Trustee, I am part of a Board that is required to make decisions that impact our colleagues and support our strategic objectives. In order to make the most informed decisions, I believe it is important to see firsthand the workings of the organisation and to hear directly from colleagues themselves to give me more context and information when making decisions. Joining the organisation relatively recently, too, I wanted to capitalise on this opportunity to meet as many colleagues as possible and people who might not often get a chance to come off the care floor to speak to a Trustee or the Leadership Team.

“I had a tour of the In Patient Unit at Fair Havens and the other incredible facilities we have on offer. I also met with a patient who was admitted on the day, shadowing the admission process so I could see what goes into welcoming someone to the hospice.

“For me, the most enjoyable part of the day was getting to meet the Care Team and hear why they are so passionate about the care we provide. Clinical care is not an area I have encountered in my career before, so everything I was introduced to was new from a professional perspective. I will take away a lot from my experience, which will help me to make informed decisions based on what I witnessed and experienced. I’m really grateful for the team hosting me for the day.”
