Occasional volunteering is a great way to get involved, but on a flexible basis. We are looking for volunteers to help at events and collections, where you decide how much time you would like to offer. If you would like to offer your time, you will be provided with full support and an event briefing so you feel adequately supported to carry out your role.

Join us for the popular Southend Half Marathon as a Havens Hospices Volunteer
What’s involved?
- Event set-up / Event pack down
- Route marshal - providing encouragement and ensuring the safety of participants along the route
- Water station marshal - keeping runners hydrated by managing water stations
Time commitment:
Saturday 13th June 2026 – approximately 6 hours (time TBC)
Sunday 14th June 2026 – approximately 8 hours depending on role (time TBC)
What do you get?
- All our volunteers will be given the equipment they need to help deliver race day.
- Pre-race instructions will be emailed out in advance and you'll get a volunteer briefing before the race so you know exactly what to expect from your day.
- It's also a great way to meet new people, learn new skills, be part of your local community, build up your confidence and have some fun!
No experience needed. Please be aware that the role may include lifting, and moving heavy objects.
Date: 11th October 2026
Location: Central Park, Chelmsford, Essex, CM2 0FQ

What’s involved?
- Baggage - Manage the drop-off and collection area for participants’ belongings.
- Route marshal - providing encouragement and ensuring the safety of participants along the route
- Water station marshal - keeping runners hydrated by managing water stations
- Finish Line - Handing out medals and water to participants as they cross the finish line.
Please be aware that some roles may involve lifting and moving heavy objects.
Time commitment:
Approximately 8 hours depending on role (time TBC)

Location: Little Havens Hospice, Benfleet, SS7 2LH
Join us as a Havens Hospices Volunteer
What’s involved?
- Route marshal - providing encouragement and ensuring the safety of participants along the route
- Registration assistant - Supporting participants with the sign-up process, collecting their race pack, and assisting with payments.
- Finish Line Assistant – Support with handing out water, medals and cheering participants through the finish funnel.
- Car Park Assistant – Directing and placing cars in an organised manor. Ensuring traffic is managed efficiently
- General Set-Up Assistant – Could include supporting set up of event village, supporting set up of finish funnel, and/or general tasks
Time commitment:
Approximately 4 hours between 3-10pm depending on your role

- You'll get a volunteer briefing before the event so you know exactly what to expect from your day.
- It's also a great way to meet new people, learn new skills, be part of your local community, build up your confidence and have some fun!
No experience needed. Please be aware that the role may include lifting, and moving heavy objects. Must be able to stand for a long period of time, or be able to comfortably move around potentially uneven ground in mobility scooter.
