Children Matter

Significant numbers of young people in the U.K are affected by the death of a parent and or other adults who have a significant impact on their lives. Often they will feel very alone and face many challenges as they manage the impact of the death.

A parent of a child under the age of 18 dies every 22 minutes in the UK; around 23,600 a year. This equates to around 111 children being bereaved of a parent every day. 1 in 29 5-16 year old’s have been bereaved of a parent or sibling – that’s a child in every average class.

How do we talk with children about this challenging subject? Will I make it worse? What if I get upset? Can I support a child? What words should I use? How honest can I be? What about funerals? In a supported, interactive and creative course we explore together ways of working with pre and post bereaved children. We take a look at ages and stages of development and grief. We hear from children about their experiences and what they found was helpful.

Our lead facilitator Sue Pullen has many years of experience working with children and young people in a hospice setting, in the community, working with social care teams and supporting children and staff in schools.

This course is for anyone who may come into contact with children facing bereavement. However, this course is NOT recommended for those who have been bereaved in the last year
