Havens Hospices Celebrates One Year of Reuse Shop at Stock Road Household Wate Recycling Centre

Havens Hospices is celebrating the first anniversary of its innovative charity shop at the Stock Road Recycling Centre, marking a year of reducing waste, supporting sustainability, and raising vital funds for local hospice care.

The funds raised at the Reuse store are enough to cover an astonishing 1,750 hours of specialist care at Fair Havens and Little Havens. Led by a team of experienced nurses, this could include providing care during a respite break, emergency stay or support at the end of someone’s life.

Since opening its doors, the Reuse shop – one of the first of its kind in Essex – has also helped thousands of pre-loved items find a new home, giving them a second life while preventing unnecessary waste.

The project, delivered in partnership with SUEZ and Southend-on-Sea City Council, plays an important role in efforts to cut carbon emissions and support the city’s ambition to become carbon neutral by 2030.

Conveniently located at the Recycling Centre on Stock Road, the shop makes it easier than ever for local residents to donate and shop sustainably. Visitors dropping off items can simply pass on reusable goods, while bargain hunters can browse a wide range of affordable finds – from homeware to sports equipment – all while supporting a local cause.

Mark Davis, Head of Trading at Havens Hospices, said: “We are incredibly proud to be celebrating one year of our Stock Road Reuse shop. This project has shown how small actions – like donating or buying pre-loved items – can make a big difference. Not only are we helping to reduce waste and support the environment, but every purchase also helps fund our specialist care for children, young people and adults living with incurable conditions across Essex.

“Thanks to our partners at SUEZ and Southend-on-Sea City Council, we’ve created a space that brings together sustainability and community support in a really meaningful way.”

James Gatter, SUEZ Southend Contract manager said, ‘This is a brilliant example of partnership working with residents, the City council and Havens Hospices. The funds raised from items that have been diverted away from waste disposal to reuse make a real difference to people who need the support from Havens Hospices. This also makes a difference to the environment and the economy, leaving a lasting impact for the people of Southend. Re-use is one of the best things we can implement as we work towards a more circular economy.

Alan Richards, Executive director for Environment and Place, Southend City Council said, “We’re incredibly proud to see the impact the Reuse shop has made over the past year. It’s a fantastic example of how simple, everyday actions like donating or buying pre-loved items can have a lasting impact on both the environment and our community. By working in partnership with Havens Hospices and SUEZ, we’re not only reducing waste and supporting our carbon impact but also helping to fund vital care for local people. It’s a brilliant initiative and we’re excited to see it continue to grow.”

Volunteers are at the heart of the shop and play a vital role in helping raise funds for local hospice care. From welcoming customers with a smile and operating the till, to pricing donations, rotating stock, restocking shelves and helping keep the shop tidy, every task makes a real difference. Havens Hospices are currently looking for friendly and reliable volunteers to join the team on Wednesdays, Saturdays or Sundays, and would love to hear from anyone who can spare a few hours to support their local hospice.

Havens Hospices provides specialist compassionate care to children, young people and adults who are living with incurable conditions. They offer a wide range of care and support options for patients and their loved ones, based on their needs and wishes. This can be in the comfort of their own home, in the hospices – Fair Havens for adults or Little Havens for children – or a combination. All of this care is provided free of charge, thanks to the generosity of supporters, including those who donate and shop at its network of 27 charity shops.
