Local Youth Worker Takes on London Marathon for Families He Supports

A local hospice Youth Worker will be taking on the iconic London Marathon this spring, raising money for the charity where he works and in memory of his beloved grandfather.

George Claydon, Youth Worker at Havens Hospices, has chosen to run the 26.2-mile challenge in support of the charity after experiencing its care first-hand.

George said, “We said our last goodbyes to my wonderful Grandpa after a short stay at Fair Havens, where we felt so supported as a family – it was the perfect environment for him to feel comfortable in his final few days.”

As well as his personal connection, George sees the impact of hospice care every day in his role at the charity’s children’s hospice Little Havens. He supports young people and families across Essex through services including stay-and-play sessions, community respite, youth groups, and end-of-life care.

“Seeing the impact our care has on families and knowing that a large percentage of our funding comes from donations, I wanted to do my bit to make sure it continues,” he said. “I get to see firsthand how the money raised makes a difference for our families, and knowing I have contributed to that would be an incredible thing.”

Balancing marathon training with a busy life has been no small feat. Alongside working full-time, George has been moving house and planning a wedding with his fiancée Fern. Despite the challenge, he has been putting in the miles and recently completed the Benfleet 15 in January, boosting his confidence ahead of race day.

“My training has been a bit of a mixed bag,” George added. “I’ve been getting out there and doing my long runs, but balancing it all has been a bit crazy! Completing the Benfleet 15 has given me the confidence that I can take on these really hard challenges, so fingers crossed the training keeps going well, and I can enjoy the day itself.”

George is especially looking forward to the atmosphere on the day. Having previously watched his dad, sister and sister-in-law take part in the London Marathon, he is excited to experience it from the other side of the barriers.

“I’m most looking forward to seeing my friends and family along the route. The energy and atmosphere in the crowd are amazing, so I can’t imagine what it will be like as a runner.”

Havens Hospices provides specialist care and support for babies, children and adults living with complex or incurable conditions across Essex, helping families make every day count.
