Local hospice uses art to help children navigate grief and incurable conditions

Children supported by Havens Hospices are sharing the hidden feelings that come with incurable conditions and grief.

On 4th and 5th July, as part of the Leigh Art Trail, an exhibition of artwork created by children in counselling sessions and wellbeing groups will be displayed at The Living Room, Leigh Road, SS9 1JE.

The art exhibition called ‘My Invisible Backpack – What’s In Yours?’ will feature inspiring artwork created in one-to-one counselling sessions and wellbeing support groups at Havens Hospices. It explores the hidden feelings, emotions and challenges they carry every day, whether coping with the grief of losing a loved one or living alongside a family member who has an incurable condition.

Our Children and Young People’s Wellbeing Team often find that many youngsters may struggle to put their feelings into words so emotions and challenges may go unnoticed. feelings and challenges they face can go unnoticed. Creative activities such as painting, drawing and poetry can help children express emotions they may feel too vulnerable to verbalise.

Katherine Barrett, a Children’s and Young Person Counsellor at the charity, says, “It is an incredible opportunity to showcase the amazing work of our young people and to raise awareness in the local community about views and experiences of complex conditions and grief for young people, which can often be overlooked”

Havens Hospices which is made up of Little Havens and Fair Havens who provide care and support to babies, children, young people and adults living with incurable conditions.

The free exhibition will be held in The Living Room, Leigh Road, SS9 1JE, on the 4th and 5th July from 10am to 4pm.
