Local Hospice Opens New Charity Shop at Stock Road Recycling Centre

Havens Hospices are helping turn waste into wonder as doors open at its latest charity shop located within the Southend Recycling Centre. One of the first of its kind in Essex, the exciting venture will support waste management company SUEZ meet its annual commitment to decrease CO2 emissions by more than 4,000 tonnes, helping Southend-on-Sea City Council to achieve its carbon neutral aspirations by 2030.

Conveniently located at the Recycling Centre based in Stock Road, the innovative project makes it easier than ever for local residents to give their pre-loved items a second life.

”We are always looking for new ways to connect with the community and make donating simple and meaningful.” said Mark Davis, Head of Trading at Havens Hospice. “Thanks to SUEZ and Southend-on-Sea City Council, we can now welcome visitors to the Recycling Centre and help make a real difference to local families. Not only will you be able to save money, but you are also helping to reduce waste and support the environment.’

Visitors can discover amazing deals in-store, with proceeds going directly towards providing specialist hospice care for children, adults, and families across Essex.  Shoppers can visit the shop even if they live outside the area, using the allocated car parking spaces.

Cllr Lydia Hyde, cabinet member for climate, environment and waste, said: “We’re delighted to support the opening of the Havens Hospice shop at Stock Road HWRC. This fantastic initiative gives residents the opportunity to donate reusable items, helping to reduce waste while supporting the incredible care Havens Hospice provides to our community. It’s a practical and meaningful way for people to make a real difference.”

Suez Recycling and Recovery UK, who took over the site on 5th April, is a champion of sustainability, with a network of reuse shops across the country that help divert valuable items from going to waste.

“We are really excited to open the new reuse shop at Stock Road Household Waste Recycling Centre, in partnership with Havens Hospices and Southend City Council. This improved space makes it easier for residents to donate pre-loved items – giving them a second life while supporting a fantastic charity that provides vital care for people living with incurable conditions. Said Regional Manager at SUEZ, Tom Jones.

“All profits from the shop will go directly to Havens Hospices, helping them continue their amazing work in the community. The shop is also part of our wider improvements to Southend’s recycling centres and our ongoing commitment to a more sustainable city.”

The new cashless shop will be open 9am – 5pm every day except Thursday when the Centre is closed, and accepts a wide range of items in good, reusable condition.
