Light Up a Life and keep loved ones’ memories alive

A local charity is inviting the community to ‘Light Up a Life’ and remember those special to them this Christmas.

‘Light Up a Life’ by Havens Hospices gives people the opportunity to dedicate a light on the hospices’ Christmas trees in memory of someone close to them.

Not only does a donation dedicate a light, but the charity will also send a special card to keep, honouring loved ones, and a tag for supporters to hang on their own tree at home.

If a dedication is received by Friday 17th November, names of loved ones will be placed inside a Book of Remembrance available to view throughout December and into 2024 at Canvey Methodist Church, St Mary’s Church in Prittlewell and Fair Havens Hospice.

Dedications received before and after Friday 17th November will be placed in an online Book of Remembrance available to view digitally from Friday 12th December.

Every dedication will also help to light up the life of a child, young person or adult who needs care from Havens Hospices through their life’s journey.

The charity will be holding its local special remembrance services on various dates throughout December:

  • Saturday 2nd December at 4pm – Canvey Methodist Church, SS8 9AB
  • Saturday 9th December at 4.15pm – St Mary’s Church, Prittlewell, Southend, SS2 6LQ
  • Sunday 10th December at 4pm – Hadleigh Salvation Army Temple, SS7 2PF

Last year, just over 900 people came together in grief, remembrance and in celebration of the people they love, miss and hold in their hearts.

Sharon Davies, the organiser of the campaign at Havens Hospices, says: “Every Christmas our Light Up a Life appeal is embraced warmly in the hearts of the local community. Havens Hospices raised £40,000 last year, which helped to care for more people facing the devasting news of an incurable condition and give hundreds of local children, young people and adults the care they deserve.

“Havens Hospices understands that the festive season can sometimes be a difficult time many. Light up a Life was created especially to make space and time to honour and give thanks for the life, or lives, of the people who matter to you, who will always be in your memories and in your heart.

“You don’t have to have experienced our hospice care to dedicate a light and anyone can join our services. When our Christmas trees are lit up, they are a beautiful reminder of those special people, with every sparkle representing the life of someone who is greatly missed and fondly remembered.”
