Hospice worker will be ‘Winging It’ for hospice care

The sky is the limit for a healthcare worker from Rayleigh as she prepares to stand on the wing of a plane travelling 100 MPH in aid of the hospice she works for.

Abbi Ranger, a Nursing Assistant for Fair Havens Hospice at Home, will be braving the skies on 8th April in Upminster. Abbi hopes to raise £600 in sponsorship for Havens Hospices to support the families she cares for in the community.

Abbi was inspired to work for the charity after the care her grandad received from the Hospice at Home team at the end of his life. The hospice granted Barry, Abbi’s Grandad, his last wish, which was to live his last days in the comfort of his own home overlooking the River Crouch in Hullbridge.

She said: “The care my grandad received towards the end of his life was exceptional. Because of Havens Hospices, Grandad was able to live his last days in the comfort of the home he loved. The Care Team made sure that happened for him, making him as comfortable as possible, surrounded by the love of his family.

“Now I work for the hospice, I am able to bring comfort to other families who have been told there is no cure for their loved one’s illness and help them make the most of the special time they have left together.”

Abbi will join other ‘wing walkers’ supporting the charity by standing on the wing of a biplane whilst travelling up to speeds of 100 MPH, 900 ft in the air.

Susie May, Fundraising Officer at Havens Hospices says, “We are really looking forward to another year of our popular Wing Walk challenge taking place to raise vital funds for our care. We must raise over £85,000 a week to be there for every family who needs us during the most difficult time in their lives.

“We still have some places remaining for our next Wing Walk in August, perfect for thrill seekers looking for an experience of a lifetime.”

Havens Hospices’ next Wing Walk challenge is 12th August and there is a skydive fundraiser taking place on the 9th September. For more information visit www.havenshospices.org.uk/wingwalk or email Susie at smay@havenshospices.org.uk
