Havens Hospices invites community to remember loved ones with special robin decorations

Havens Hospices is inviting the local community to remember loved ones this winter by dedicating a robin decoration in their memory.

The charity has launched its Robins of Remembrance appeal for the second year, following the success of 2024 when over 700 beautiful robin decorations adorned Christmas trees outside the hospices throughout December.

For £18, supporters will receive a limited-edition robin decoration to hang on their tree at home, while a matching robin will be displayed on Christmas trees at either Fair Havens in Prittlewell or Little Havens in Thundersley throughout December and into early January.

One of those who has embraced the campaign is long-standing supporter Hayley Black, from Canvey Island, who has raised nearly £12,000 for Havens Hospices over 13 years, including running the London Marathon, skydiving, festive house light displays, and the charity’s Santa Runs.

This year, Hayley has dedicated a robin in memory of her Nan and Grandad as a surprise gift for her mum.

She said: “Anyone who has lost someone holds a special place in their heart for Robins. To be able to support an amazing charity like Havens Hospices and remember your loved ones at the same time is a very special thing to be able to do.

Hayley continued, “I have dedicated a Robin in memory of my Nan and Grandad and have done this as a surprise for my Mum. I cannot wait to give her the Robin when it arrives to hang on our tree and also be able to tell her a Robin for her Mum and Dad is also hanging on a tree at the hospice. This will mean so much to our family to see the Robin on our tree while also helping the amazing work of Havens Hospices.”

Each robin hung on the hospice trees will be dedicated to a loved one, creating a beautiful display celebrating the lives of those who are missed. The trees will be on display outside Little Havens and Fair Havens from 1st December to 3rd  January for everyone to see.

All proceeds from the appeal will help fund specialist care and support for people of all ages living with incurable conditions across Essex.

Ella Huber-Brown, Head of Fundraising and Marketing at Havens Hospices, said: “We were overwhelmed by the community’s response to Robins of Remembrance last year, with over 700 dedications adorning our trees. This appeal offers families a meaningful way to honour their loved ones while supporting the specialist care we provide.

“Stories like Hayley’s remind us why this appeal is so special. The fact that she’s surprising her mum with this thoughtful tribute to her Nan and Grandad shows the deep meaning these robins hold for families. Every donation helps us continue providing free specialist care and support to people living with incurable conditions and their families across our community. Whether that’s care at home, respite breaks, therapies, or bereavement support, these funds make a real difference to people when they need us most.

“We invite everyone to join us in creating this beautiful display of remembrance once again this winter.”
