Angus is a self-taught artist known for pushing creative boundaries by using unconventional materials, such as ceramic tiles and LEGO bricks, and techniques rarely seen in street art or galleries. This summer, he joins a host of talented artists taking part in Waddle-on-Sea – a free, family-friendly art trail featuring giant penguin sculptures across Southend-on-Sea and Leigh-on-Sea. Running from 11 July to 3 September, the trail is raising vital funds for Havens Hospices.
Angus says, “Growing up in Bristol, I’ve always been surrounded by incredible street art and graffiti. That influence really pushed me to try new things and just give it a go.”
His Waddle-on-Sea penguin will be hard to miss. He says, “For this sculpture, I’ve used coins to create a metallic finish you don’t often see in public art. It makes people stop, look twice, and interact with the piece in a different way.”
Angus was drawn to the Waddle-on-Sea art trail for two key reasons. He says, “First and foremost, it’s a brilliant cause – raising huge amounts for Fair Havens and Little Havens. Secondly, Southend is known for its vibrant street art scene, and I’ve always wanted to paint there. Hopefully, when the trail is live, I’ll get the chance to explore and maybe leave a new piece or two around the city.”
This isn’t Angus’ first time working on large-scale sculptures. He has decorated several Wild in Art pieces this year, as well as contributed to several independent trails closer to home. From unicorns and lions to elephants and even a lighthouse, he sees these projects as a win for everyone involved – enjoyable to create, engaging for the public, and a powerful way to raise funds for charity.
Angus adds, “These trails help organisations like Havens Hospices reach new audiences, which is so important in today’s world. At the same time, they allow artists to connect with people who might not usually engage with art – and best of all, it’s completely free for the public to enjoy.”
Although Angus doesn’t have a personal connection to hospice care, he understands how crucial that support can be. “From what friends and family have shared, hospices are essential. I’m just happy to help in whatever way I can.”
He is also excited to visit Southend-on-Sea for the very first time. “I’ve got friends in the area, so I’m really looking forward to finally exploring your new city and seeing the full trail come to life.”
At the end of the trail, the penguin sculptures will be auctioned to raise funds for the free, specialist care provided by Havens Hospices to children, adults and families living with incurable conditions. The charity’s previous trails, Hares About Town and Herd In The City, have raised over £1 million thanks to the generosity of the community.
The Waddle-on-Sea app will be available from the App Store and Google Play in early July.
