Brave Fundraisers Wing It For Havens Hospices

Four local fundraisers have raised thousands for a local hospice charity by wing walking through the skies.

On Saturday 7th September, the daring quartet – Faith Horsley, Gail Campton, Lucy Haswell and Jax Mcleod – soared through the skies strapped to a wing of a bi-plane at speeds of up to 110 MPH, all in support of raising vital funds for Havens Hospices.

The charity provides specialist care and support to people of all ages living with incurable conditions across Essex within the community and at its two hospices, Fair Havens and Little Havens. Its care can only exist thanks to the support from the community, including those who take on challenges like a wing walk.

Each of the supporters were motivated by a personal connection to Havens Hospices; Lucy is a nurse who works in the Fair Havens Community Team as its Team Leader, Jax works within the charity’s Donations Processing Team, Gail volunteers her time on the Fair Havens In-Patient Unit, and Faith took on the challenge in memory of her friend Paula, who received care from Fair Havens.

After the wing walk, Jax said: “It was great to have such an amazing experience, the whole team from Havens Hospices and the Wing Walk Company were so professional. Having worked for the charity for almost 10 years, it was a privilege to be able to do this and to help raise much-needed funds to help patients, and their families and friends. It’s said things like this are regarded as a ‘once in a lifetime event’…but I’ll certainly be back for more.”

Together, the team’s efforts have already raised over £6,500, with donations still coming in.

Susie May, Fundraising Officer at Havens Hospices, said: “We are incredibly proud of our brave fundraisers – their dedication and courage are truly making every day count for the families we care for. We must raise more than £124,000 a week to provide specialist care and support to everyone who needs us, and we are deeply grateful for their support and all the generous donations from their family and friends.”
