Martin’s Story

“You don’t realise how much life you have in you until you come to places like this. It gives you a purpose"

“I found myself imprisoned almost, in my own home and mind, but coming to the Hub has released me from that. I feel like I’ve started living again.

“The first time I walked into Fair Havens, it was like the building gave me a big hug. I had ideas of what a hospice was, but all that was kicked into touch. I didn’t realise until I came here that it’s not what it says on the tin.

“I started off by attending the HOPE course and taking part in art classes. I love the outdoors and grow my own fruit and vegetables, so I am looking forward to taking part in Therapy Through Nature.”

The ‘HOPE Course’ (Help Overcoming Problems Effectively) helps people manage the day-to-day impact their incurable condition has on their lives and rediscover their strengths. It is an interactive, group-based, self-management support course which runs for six weeks.

“You don’t realise how much life you have in you until you come to places like this. It gives you a purpose and has given me a sense of purpose in other areas of my life, including my relationships with my wife and children. I’ve even started painting and writing again.

“The Hub is great, and the staff are marvellous and passionate about what they do. On the days I’m not in, I miss the Hub – it’s addictive!

“I’m naturally shy, but now I come here and am experiencing new things, socialising and talking to people. It’s nice to live instead of exist.”
