Waddle-on-Sea Penguin Kai Ready for New Home

One of the highlights of this year’s Waddle-on-Sea trail is now ready for its next adventure.

‘Kai the Recycled Glass Penguin’, created by artist Louise Truslow, with a splendid recycled glass waistcoat, is available to bid on at the upcoming auction, with proceeds going to Havens Hospices to help fund its vital care and support in the local community.

Louise, a largely self-taught artist from Leigh-on-Sea, has worked in watercolours, oils, and glass. She describes her process as trial and error, but one that is full of joy. “There are no rules, so I really can make it up as I go along with the type of work that I do,” she says. Her glasswork for Kai is entirely made from recycled materials. Broken lead-free crystal glass, all of which would have gone to landfill, was fired in her kiln to create the vibrant, ocean-inspired colours of the penguin’s body.

Kai’s name means ‘ocean,’ and the design reflects Louise’s inspiration from the swirling patterns of the Antarctic seas. “I thought about penguins, oceans, and the ocean colours I’m using. I looked at pictures of the Antarctic from space and used those amazing patterns as inspiration for the colours and shapes on his waistcoat,” she explains.

For Louise, the project was about more than creating art. “This trail gave me the chance to do the things I love, painting and glass making, and also highlight the importance of recycling,” she says.

The Waddle-on-Sea trail brought dozens of colourful penguins to Southend and Leigh this summer, attracting families, art enthusiasts, and visitors from across the country. More importantly, it raises vital funds for Havens Hospices, which provides specialist care and support to local families.

Louise says, “I’ve always worked with charities throughout my career, but this is one of the most interesting and worthwhile ones I’ve been involved with. I really hope Kai raises lots of money for the cause.” Louise adds.

With the trail now finished, the penguins are moving on to their next homes. Kai, along with 30 other large and six baby sculptures, can now be bid for in the upcoming auction, giving art lovers a chance to own a unique piece while supporting a local charity.

Vanessa Harvey, Project Manager for Havens Hospices, said, “Kai and the other Waddle-on-Sea penguins have brought so much joy to our community. We’re so grateful to Louise and all the artists for their creativity. If you’d like to take home a piece of the trail, don’t miss the auction. Every bid helps us continue providing vital care and support to local families.”
