Starting at dusk, with registration opening at 4:45pm, hundreds of walkers will come together in their brightest glow gear to complete either a 5K or 12.5K route, lighting up the surrounding streets, woodland and Hadleigh Castle as they take on this unforgettable evening challenge in support of Havens Hospices. But none of it would be possible without the volunteers who help bring the event to life.
Havens Hospices is looking for volunteers to take on a variety of roles on the night, including route marshals to encourage and support walkers along the way, registration assistants to help participants sign in and collect their race packs, finish line assistants handing out medals, car park assistants helping manage traffic, and general set-up assistants supporting the event village and finish funnel. No experience is needed, and full training and a briefing will be given before the event.
What makes the evening truly magical is that whether people are walking in memory of a loved one or simply enjoying a fun evening with family and friends, every step will help support Havens Hospices in continuing to provide care for families living with incurable conditions.
Dawn and Amy, who have volunteered at many Havens Hospices events, recall their personal reason for volunteering: “We decided as a family to start volunteering after Tyler passed away. Not only were Little Havens there throughout Tyler’s illness, but they were there for us afterwards too, supporting our family. Eight years on, they’re still supporting us in any way they can. We decided to volunteer to give back and help other families be supported through their journeys. If anyone has spare time to help, please volunteer – not only does it help Havens Hospices, it’s great fun, and we always leave an event with a smile on our faces.”
Abbey, Fundraising Officer at Havens Hospices, said, “Glow for Havens is a fantastic evening that brings people of all ages together to enjoy a memorable walk through the woodland while raising vital funds for local hospice care. Volunteering is also a brilliant way to meet new people, learn new skills and be part of your local community, all while having fun. We’d love as many people as possible to join our volunteer team this year.”
Volunteers should be able to stand for long periods or comfortably move around potentially uneven ground, and the role may involve some lifting and moving of heavy objects. Time commitment is approximately four hours between 3pm and 10pm, depending on the role.
