Local woman set to tackle half marathon in London’s Royal Parks

Local resident Kat Smith will be joining the prestigious Royal Parks Half Marathon in London to raise vital funds for the charity which cared for her father.

Kat, a dedicated supporter of local hospice charity Havens Hospices, will be tying up her laces on Sunday, 13th October, starting in Hyde Park, to run 13.1 miles across four Royal Parks for a cause close to her heart. She will be running alongside her friend Carey for support, who is also running in memory of her father for another charity.

Fair Havens, in Prittlewell, cared for Kat’s father, Ray, at the end of his life and supported the whole family during the most challenging time of their lives.

Ray was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2019, which spread to his brain and spine. He stayed at the hospice for a week in July 2021 for symptom management care. Later that summer, Ray’s condition deteriorated, and he was admitted to the hospice for care at the end of his life. Ray died on 15th August at Fair Havens, surrounded by his family.

During his stays, Fair Havens helped Ray to attend two ‘bucket list’ events – a sentimental steam train trip and walking his daughter Lisa down the aisle on her wedding day. The care from Fair Havens left a lasting impression on his family, and since Ray died, they’ve been inspired to fundraise in his memory.

Kat said: “In the weeks and months after Dad’s death, we had time to reflect on how important this care was and how everyone should have the opportunity to be supported by Fair Havens when and if needed. This invaluable care comes at a huge cost, and fundraising is vital so they can keep providing it to those most in need.

“Fundraising for Havens Hospices has become a big part of our lives, and it is very important to all of us, even our children. We are always looking for new ways to challenge ourselves and raise vital funds, and there is still so much more we can give because what Fair Havens did for our family was truly invaluable.”
