Employees from Argenta, a Lloyd’s managing agent, saw first-hand how Havens Hospices’ Wellbeing Team use creative activities to help young people cope with the emotions and worries experienced alongside illness, grief and bereavement while volunteering in the Helping Hands Programme at Little Havens.  

The Helping Hands Programme is a volunteer initiative where businesses and community groups help maintain outdoor spaces at Fair Havens or Little Havens.  

After volunteering, Argenta were inspired to bring the exhibition curated by Havens Hospices to their London office and organised a bake sale to accompany the event and raise funds to support local hospice care.  

The exhibition titled ‘My Invisible Backpack – What’s in Yours?’ displays artwork created by children and young people supported by Havens Hospices. The Wellbeing Team encourage children to use creative activities like painting, drawing, and poetry as an outlet to express feelings they may have difficulty sharing out loud. The exhibition was first shown in the Leigh Art Trail in July and raises awareness of the emotional “backpack” every child carries whether they’re grieving or living alongside illness. 

The artwork is now displayed in Argenta’s office, based in the heart of the City of London near Fenchurch Street, and has given employees a deeper understanding of the vital role hospice care plays in supporting families with the emotional challenges they face. 

Later this summer, Argenta have organised a VIP preview of the exhibition and will be inviting the young artists and their families to London to see their artwork displayed around their building.  

Seeing their artwork presented to a wider audience gives the children and their families an opportunity to be proud of their creativity and the part they are playing in raising awareness of hospice care and the charity.
