Local businesses unite for annual charity football match in support of hospice care

Businesses from across South East Essex will be swapping their suits for football boots as they take part in an annual charity match, Play on the Pitch, in aid of Havens Hospices.

On Thursday 14 May, Roots Hall – home of Southend United Football Club – will host teams made up of staff from BTMK, Barclays, Able Group, Rickard Luckin, Barrons, Ayers & Cruiks, Azets, Revive Digital and PFS Group Limited. The event aims to raise vital funds to support local children and adults living with incurable conditions.

Members of the public are invited to attend, cheer on the players and take part in a range of activities throughout the evening. These include an auction and raffle, half-time entertainment from Expressions Theatre Arts, and a special appearance from this year’s star guest player, TikToker Alexis LOS.

Havens Hospices must raise more than £208,000 every week to continue providing its specialist care. The charity supports families who have been told there is no cure for their loved one’s illness, helping to control pain and symptoms, offering respite care and supporting people of all ages at the end of their lives.

This specialist care is provided free of charge and is available for as long as it is needed -whether in a person’s home or at the charity’s two hospices, Fair Havens and Little Havens.

Codey Gill, Head of Marketing and Business at BTMK Solicitors, said: “It’s been an incredible journey being involved with Play on the Pitch for over a decade, right from the very first event. Each year, it’s a privilege to help bring the community together at the iconic Roots Hall, supporting Havens Hospices and the vital care they provide across Essex. From managing teams and organising event logistics to collaborating with players and supporters, every element of Play on the Pitch is fuelled by a collective passion for making a genuine difference.

“BTMK Solicitors is especially proud to have played a key role in the event’s continued success, working alongside so many dedicated local professionals to ensure everything runs smoothly. Seeing the event flourish and knowing our efforts help raise essential funds for such an important local cause is truly rewarding. I’m proud to have contributed to building its legacy and look forward to continuing this tradition of teamwork, fun, and community.”

Peter Laight, Business Relationship Director at Barclays, said: “We’re delighted to mark the 12th Play on the Pitch and continue supporting Havens Hospices’ vital work for the Southend community.”

Steve Yeung, Corporate Fundraising Officer at Havens Hospices, said: “We can’t thank these incredible businesses enough for organising and taking part in this fantastic annual fundraiser. Over the past 12 years, companies involved have raised more than £300,000, helping Havens Hospices continue providing specialist hospice care to families who rely on our support during the most difficult times.”

Entry to the event is via a donation on the gate at Roots Hall. Gates open at 5.30pm, with kick-off at 6pm.
