vintage train visits southend

06 November 2018

On Saturday 3rd November, Southend was visited by a luxury vintage train for a special journey in aid of Havens Hospices.

The famous Belmond British Pullman, the sister train to the iconic Venice Simplon Orient Express, made the special journey through the Essex Countryside to Twickenham, transporting their guests to the ‘Golden Era of Travel’ as they enjoyed a gala evening in pure luxury.

The Gala started with a champagne reception followed by a four-course gourmet dinner served on the finest china and wine served in crystal before enjoying entertainment from jazz musicians and magicians.

Some were lucky to get to travel in some of the more famous carriages that are steeped in prestigious history –Cygnus, Phoenix and Pegasus.  Cygnus was used in the Festival of Britain in 1951 and also provided Dustin Hoffman and Vanessa Redgrave the set for their 1979 film ‘Agatha.’ Phoenix was the favourite carriage of both the Queen and Queen Mother and famously used for visiting Heads of State as was Pegasus which famously carried Winston Churchill’s coffin from London to Bladon as part of his funeral.

Proceeds from the excursion are going towards the new Fair Havens Hospice, which the charity that cares for children, young people and adults with life-limiting illnesses, is building opposite Priory Park.  Due to the popularity of the first trip the charity have chartered the Belmond to make a second journey from Southend on Saturday 13th July

Louise Gloyne, says,

“Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and we’re thrilled that we are bringing the train back to Southend next year.

“This really is a unique and exciting opportunity to ride aboard this historic train. It will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience to enjoy a fabulous gala event in the luxurious surrounds of the Belmond British Pullman, all whilst helping to support a new adult hospice for South Essex.”

The new Fair Havens Hospice in Prittlewell will care for twice as many patients who’re facing an illness which cannot be cured. A public appeal to raise the remaining £2.5 million needed will commence in the spring.

A limited number of tickets are now available at £299 per person and available in bookings of two, four or entire carriages can be booked for up to 26 people. Gift vouchers can also be purchased. Tickets include return travel on the Belmond British Pullman, champagne reception, four- course dinner, one bottle of wine per couple and coffee and petit fours.
