Havens Hospices is searching for those with some pedal power to join them on their first bespoke challenge.
Havens Hospices are putting together a team of cyclists to ride from their children’s hospice, Little Havens in Thundersley, to Amsterdam in Holland, and there are a limited number of spaces available for this one-off event.
The group will leave Little Havens on Friday 7th September for the 150 mile cycle, travelling through rural Essex and Suffolk before boarding the overnight ferry at Harwich. After a hearty breakfast the group will then cycle from the Hook of Holland along the coast through The Hague and other towns to get to the world’s most bicycle-friendly city - Amsterdam. They will then get a chance to soak in the culture and celebrate their achievement, before heading home the following day.
Those taking part will be raising money for the charity’s three hospices, Fair Havens for adults, Little Havens for children and The J’s Hospice for young adults.
Nathan Strange 42 from Thorpe Bay has signed up with his friends Savva 44 and Simon 38.
“I’ve been supporting Havens Hospices for quite some time as Fair Havens Hospice cared for my father Steven in 2005 and 2006. The care they provided to Dad was amazing; they really did make a difference to his life and to ours - we all mattered at Havens; they care for all who are affected, not just Dad.
“I did the London to Paris ride last year with Savva to raise money for Havens and we both really enjoyed it; so when we heard about this brand new challenge we had to get involved. It sounds really exciting and it’s fantastic that they have created a completely unique event to them. I asked Simon to join us so we can make it a little bit of a Lad’s Weekend – I’m sure we’ll have some stories by the time we get to Amsterdam! Simon is the rookie of the group – but we’ll all support one another and it’s for such a fantastic local charity that we’ve all had some form of contact with so we’re all determined to finish!”
Simon from Faulkbourne added,
“This is the first time I have ever signed up to a doing a sponsored charity event myself, although I have previously supported Havens Hospices as the care they provide is so wonderful – I knew Nathan’s Dad and they have also cared for my cousin’s daughter at Little Havens.
“I’m really looking forward to joining Nathan and Savva on the ride; we all know how vital that care is for adults, young people, children and their families across Essex living with a life-limiting condition we want to raise as much money for Havens Hospices as we possibly can. They don’t charge a penny for the care they provide and that is only possible because of people getting involved in events, challenges or fundraising in other ways. We’re all looking forward to meeting other supporters on the ride and making memories along the way.”
