On 11th November 2017, Louise Thompson celebrated her 40th Birthday and decided to raise money for Havens Hospices in memory of her mother-in-law at the party.
Sylvia, affectionately known as Sylv, was cared for by Fair Havens for 3 weeks before her death in December 2006. Fair Havens is part of Havens Hospices which also incorporates Little Havens Hospice and The J's Hospice; the charity helps by controlling pain and medication, offering respite and caring for adults, babies, children and young people at the end of their lives.
Following Sylv’s death Louise has taken part in a number of fundraising events including the Southend Half Marathon in 2014. When Louise decided to celebrate her big birthday this year she wanted to keep her mother-in-law’s memory alive so decided to raise funds for the charity that cared for her.
Louise, 40 from Grays said
“I have really enjoyed birthday celebrations and wanted to remember Sylv at my party. I asked friends and family to consider to donating to Havens Hospices instead of buying me a birthday gift and I want to thank them all for being so generous, we have raised just over £1350 for the charity that cared for all of us when Sylv was at Fair Havens during her last few days.
“It was not just the care she received, but the support we were given at the same time which was a massive relief for the family. We felt a great sense of calm and it gave us a space to be with her; as a family we were looked after just when we needed it. That’s what Havens Hospices does – they care for everyone - not just for patients, but their families, friends and neighbours too.”
Carmel Hudson, Community Fundraising Manager at Havens Hospices commented,
“We must raise over £100,000 every week to be there for everyone who needs us and continue to provide free, specialist care for as long as it’s needed, within the home, in the community and at Fair Havens and Little Havens. We can only do this because of the generosity and kindness of our supporters like Louise; on behalf of Havens I would like to thank Louise for choosing to raise money at her birthday party for us.”
