On Tuesday 7th November 2017 the Havens Hospices charity shop in Westcliff celebrated its 10th year of raising money for adults, young adults and children with life-limiting illnesses.
The store, located on London Road in Westcliff, opened in November 2007 and sales from the shop have been helping the charity since it opened its doors. The money raised in the shop helps Havens Hospices provide short breaks, manage pain and symptoms and care for seriously ill babies, children, young people and adults across Essex, whilst giving vital support to their family and friends at the same time.
Carol Harrison, who has managed the shop for Havens Hospices since it opened said,
“I’ve been here for the past ten years and have seen this shop evolve year on year. Just under two years ago we decided to transform the shop into an outlet store where everything we stock is £2 and we have been bowled over by the generosity of our local community who not only bring in a huge variety of donations, but often leave with a fair few purchases as well!
“Myself and my amazing staff and volunteers have enjoyed every moment over the last ten years and look forward to carrying on making as much money as we can for the charity and `Making every day count’ for all who access the hospices.”
Two volunteers enjoying the celebration are sisters Nicola Holness, 24 and Jenna Elks, 21 who have been volunteering at the Westcliff shop since 2013 and 2014. Nicola explained,
“I started volunteering in 2013 as work experience as I wanted to work in retail, I now have a job at a major supermarket, but because I enjoyed volunteering I’ve continued working with Havens Hospices in the shop. One day I would like to be a visual merchandiser and it’s really nice because Carol lets me develop my skills by asking me to help with window displays including dressing the Christmas Window.
“When my sister started looking for a job, I suggested volunteering to her and so she joined me at the shop – again volunteering has helped open doors for Jenna in terms of work. It’s a really great way to build up skills and let’s be honest it’s a rewarding experience as you know you’re helping others through what you’re doing. I’d recommend it to anyone.”
Trevor Johnson Director of Trading at Havens Hospices said
“The work that everyone does at the Westcliff shop is fantastic and reaching 10 years really is a testament to how hard they’ve all worked to become an integral part of their local community. I would like to thank the local community for their generosity and support over the past 10 years. Havens Hospices have to raise £100,000 a week to be there for everyone who needs us, all our care and support is free and that is only possible because of the kindness of our supporters. Every purchase helps an adult, baby, child or young person living with a serious illness be as pain free and comfortable as possible – for as long as needed; so thank you.”
