Georgia Madden Jones, 21 years old, has been volunteering for the Havens Hospices Helping Hands team since summer 2016.
The Havens Hospices Helping Hands are a community group who fundraise on behalf of both Fair Havens Hospice and Little Havens Hospice. The group attend, organise, fundraise for and represent the hospices at a huge number of community events throughout the year.
“I started volunteering because I think that the work that Havens Hospices does is so important for the local community. The amount of people that they care and support is incredible and I wanted to really help them continue to provide this much needed service in Essex.
“My volunteering role varies at each event that I attend with the Helping Hands, each one is so different, which is one of the reasons why I love doing it. I never know what to expect when I turn up to each event which makes it really exciting! My duties can range from doing bucket collections, running a tombola stall, being the Havens Hospices’ mascot - Betsy the Butterfly, to organising quiz nights!
“There are so many things I love about volunteering one is definitely the sense of community spirit you experience at the events, all of the Helping Hands team are volunteers and you can really tell that everyone in the group loves being there for the day and it’s so rewarding to be a part of that team.
“My volunteering experience is definitely the most rewarding thing I have ever done and I would recommend it to everyone, not only does it feel good knowing I’m helping towards making a difference to people’s lives, but it’s been made so worthwhile by all the new interesting people I have met and the friends I have made. It’s also improved my confidence hugely and boosted my social skills.”
Emily Tucker Community Engagement Officer at Havens Hospices said,
“The work that the Havens Hospices Helping Hands does for us is amazing, we are able to get out into the community more and meet more local residents than we would be able to without groups like this. Georgia is always a delight to work with, she is always bubbly and friendly, she really is an asset to the group and Havens Hospices. I’m very lucky to get to work alongside fantastic volunteers like Georgia and the Helping Hands.”
