Siblings hold quiz for children’s hospice after fundraising event cancelled

After having to cancel their annual garden party fundraising event, two siblings from Thundersley have organised a charity quiz instead for people to take part in from the comfort of their own homes.

This summer James and Faith Jewell, ages 11 and 8, were planning on holding a garden party to fundraise for Little Havens Hospice, but in light of the current situation around Coronavirus, they sadly had to cancel their plans. Despite this they both came up with the idea of holding a quiz for anyone to take part in at home for a donation of £2.

James and Faith, along with their mother Trudy are dedicated supporters of the local children’s hospice charity. James first began fundraising for Little Havens in 2016 when he held his first football themed garden party, raising an incredible £135. Since then he has organised more parties yearly with the help of his sister and mother, producing a whole host of activities including cake sales, party games, raffles and quizzes for all this family and friends to take part in, raising vital funds for the charity.

Additionally, Faith’s netball team, Flames are recreating one of their usual garden games from home and will be pledging money for how many netball goals can be scored in one minute. Likewise, James’ football team are completing a ‘Keepy-Uppy’ challenge at home.

Trudy Jewell said, “James and Faith had been busy planning this year’s event which we have had to cancel due to Coronavirus.  The children are very concerned about the effect the virus will have on all charities, but especially Little Havens. Our quiz last year at the party raised £45 and we hope that everybody will join in and help us raise even more money this year, so that Little Havens can continue to care for sick children.”

Sally Bridger, Community Fundraiser at Havens Hospices said, “The Jewell family are true ‘Havens Heroes’ and we can’t thank them enough for their support over the past four years. The family also take part every year in the ‘Havens to Havens Walk’ and the Santa Fun Run. In 2019, Little Havens nominated James for the ‘Thundersley Superhero Awards’ for all of his fundraising efforts and he won the junior prize. All together the family have raised between £3,000 and £4,000 for Little Havens – the exact amount we have to keep quiet as this is will give the answer away to one of their quiz questions!

“Our charity is going through some tough times at the moment after having to postpone many of our major fundraising events, so it is very heartwarming to see people still continuing to help fundraise for the charity from home.”

Little Havens provides palliative nursing and supportive care to babies, children and teenagers living with complex or incurable conditions across Essex. Their specialist Care Team can support them and their family throughout illness, death and bereavement, in the comfort of their own home or at the hospice.  They focus on their quality of life, caring for individual physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual needs.
