Family and loved ones of those who have died are being invited to remember them this Christmas at special local services organised by Havens Hospices.
The charity, which includes Fair Havens, Little Havens and The J’s, holds an annual Light up a Life appeal giving everyone the chance to dedicate a light in memory of someone close to them who has died.
Christmas trees displayed at the charity’s two hospices – Little Havens and Fair Havens – will then be decorated with lights throughout December with each light representing the life of someone who has died.
The services will be held on:
- Saturday 30th November, 4pm at St Mary’s Church, Southend
- Sunday 1st December, 4pm at Hadleigh Salvation Army Temple
- Wednesday 4th December, 6:15pm at Knightswick Centre, Canvey Island
- Thursday 5th December, 7pm at St Thomas Church, Brentwood
- Saturday 7th December, 3pm at Southend Crematorium
- Wednesday 11th December, 7:30pm at Danbury Mission
They will include prayers, carols and time for reflection with the lighting of a candle.
Sharon Davies, who arranges Light up a Life at Havens Hospices, said, “Christmas can be an incredibly difficult time for anyone who has had someone close to them die, whether it is a friend or family member. Light up a Life is a really nice way to remember that special person to you at Christmas time.
“You don’t need to have experienced hospice care to come to one of our services or to dedicate a light. Anyone can join in and you’ll be coming together with others in the community remembering loved ones while ‘Making every day count’ for everyone we care for this Christmas – so thank you.”
Havens Hospices provides palliative nursing and supportive care to adults, young people and children living with complex or incurable conditions across Essex. In return for a donation, the charity will send a remembrance card and tags for people to write a message to their loved one and hang on their tree, or the tags can be returned to the charity to hang on the tree in the Chapel. Those wishing to make a dedication can donate any amount and remember any number of people.
