Sidney Dorn, along with three friends will be lacing up their running shoes to join hundreds of runners at Havens Hospices Chelmsford Marathon Half sponsored by Beaulieu Chelmsford – a new half marathon route part of the charity’s Chelmsford Marathon event on Sunday 17th October.

Sidney was inspired to take on a fundraising challenge in memory of his cousin Felicia who was cared by Havens Hospices. He and his friends will also all be wearing pink on the day which was Felicia’s favourite colour.

Sidney said: “When Felicia passed away, I wanted to do something in her memory and pay tribute to her so I signed up to do the Half Marathon along with some friends who wanted to join me and support the cause. I’m not much of a runner, but during lockdown I did start taking up more exercise so thought this would be the perfect challenge for me and a wonderful way to raise vital funds for the charity that took the upmost care of my cousin.

“We are so thankful to all my family and friends that have supported our efforts so far and donated – we have already reached over half our target of £1,000 which is incredible.

He added: “This is my first half marathon and it’s the first for my friends too – we are really excited and can’t wait for the challenge. We are training three to four times a week and know it will be difficult but it’s for such a good cause and that is what will keep us going until we cross the finish line. I know Felicia would have been over the moon about us fundraising – she was always so happy despite being in so much pain. I have never met someone so brave, optimistic and persevering.”

Havens Hospices provides specialist palliative and supportive care through its hospice services Fair Havens, Little Havens and The J’s. This care takes place either in the hospices or in a person’s own home. The care is completely free of charge, thanks to the kindness and generosity of people making donations or taking part in events like Chelmsford Marathon Half.
