Magician Lance Corporal Richard Jones – winner of 2016’s Britain’s Got Talent – entertained young adults and their families at a community group called Inspire! run by The J’s Hospice, part of Havens Hospices.
The visit – which took place on Saturday 8th June – was organised by Together for Short Lives, the UK charity for children’s hospice services across the UK for which Richard is an Ambassador.
Richard – who is a ‘Member of the Inner Magic Circle’ – treated patients to some close-up magic and chatted with them and their families about how The J’s Hospice supports them.
The military soldier said,
“It’s been great to see what type of care The J’s Hospice offers and how it differs from other hospices that I’ve visited. I’ve been speaking with the families and young adults, and it’s clear to see how much this hospice service means to them, helping them to create happy memories.
“I love performing, but it is special when I see a spark of magic in people’s eyes like I have done here.”
Katherine Barret is a Wellbeing Event Coordinator at The J’s. She said,
“It was such a treat for our patients to witness Richard’s magic. It truly is mind-blowing! He took the time to talk with the patients and showed a keen interest in how our hospice care is supporting them.
“We want to thank Richard and Together for Short Lives for choosing The J’s for this visit. They have truly helped in ‘Making every day count’ for our patients and families by creating a wonderful experience for them to remember.”
The J’s Hospice is part of Havens Hospices, which also incorporates Fair Havens Hospice in Southend and Little Havens Hospice in Thundersley.
When a young adult has been told that there’s no cure for their illness, The J’s Hospice can help by providing tailored nursing and emotional care, advice and activities in their home or in the community. By treating patients as young adults, The J’s is allowing them to make informed choices about their treatment, helping them to live life to the full, however short.
