leigh fire station pays a surprise visit to little havens to donate much needed equipment

On Thursday 21st September, children and staff at Little Havens Hospices were paid a surprise visit by their firefighters from Leigh Fire Station.

Firefighter Terry Myers whose wife, Mandy, works at Little Havens Hospice had heard that they needed some fans for the bedrooms and decided to approach Dyson on behalf of the charity. Dyson kindly donated three brand new AM09 Hot + Cool fan heaters in response to Terry’s request through their James Dyson Foundation.

Terry said,

“When I heard that Little Havens needed new fans for the children’s bedrooms, I knew that I could help. I spoke to the care team and they said that the fans on their wish list were Dyson fans, but at £400 a fan it just wasn’t feasible; so I contacted Dyson directly and explained the need and they were only too happy to donate three fans.

“The care and support Little Havens provides is free and is given to children and their families for as long as it’s needed; so by getting the fans for free the money that would be spent on them can be used for the specialist care instead. We’ve also chosen to support Little Havens Hospice at our Open Day next weekend to try and raise more vital funds for the charity.

“We didn’t want to just drop the fans off; so with the Station Commanders permission we decided to come down in one of our engines to surprise the staff and children at Little Havens. It was really lovely to meet the heroes that work at the hospice and also the heroes that stay at the hospice, I hope they enjoyed it as much as we did.”

Rachel Knight, Little Havens’ Care Team Nurse commented

“We are incredibly grateful to Terry and Dyson for the fans; they will be invaluable to us and will make a huge difference. Some of the children under our care have difficulties controlling their body temperature due to their conditions; these fans will allow us to provide care that is tailored to the individual needs of each child. We believe in ‘Making every day count’ for every child we care for and getting to meet firemen and see a fire engine has definitely helped us do that.”

The Leigh Fire Station Open Day is on Saturday 30th September, 11am – 4pm.
