Businessmen from across Southend ditched their suits for studs and raised just over £17,000 at Barclays’ fourth annual Play on the Pitch event, which Barclays then matched bringing the total to £33,325.29.
Barclays hosted the game at Southend United Football Club’s Roots Hall stadium to raise money for Havens Hospices, which provides short-breaks and care for babies, children, teenagers and adults with life-limiting conditions at their two hospices, Little Havens and Fair Havens.
The football match on Monday 15th May raised £5,000 more than the previous year and saw workers from Barclays as well as local companies MWS Accountants, Wilkins Kennedy, Paul Robinson, Barrons, Nairnsey Fisher & Lewis, BTMK, Ayers & Cruiks and Rickard Luckin compete with Southend United Football Club ex-players and legends managing each team. In a bit of a shock result, the Southend Business Professionals won the match, which is their first victory against Barclays.
Corporate Banking Relationship Director at Barclays, Peter Laight said,
“This is the fourth year we’ve held this event and once again it was absolutely brilliant. I would like to thank all the companies for joining forces with us to raise money for Havens Hospices and congratulate them on their historic first win! “
“Southend United were again kind enough to allow us to play at Roots Hall and the Blues Legends, Adam Barratt, Steve Tilson and Danny Greaves were involved in managing the teams and it was wonderful that Adam and Steve also joined us on the pitch.”
“Finally, a big thank you to everyone who came along to cheer on the teams and helped us raise such a phenomenal amount of money for Havens Hospices. We know they need to raise millions of pounds each year to keep caring for everyone who needs them. We always wanted to create an event that would raise money that Havens Hospices can rely on every year and are thrilled to have raised even more money for them this year.”
On 18th July 2017, Peter and members of both teams who took part presented a cheque for £33,325.29 to Corporate Fundraiser at Havens Hospices, Lydia Plews.
“On behalf of Havens Hospices, I would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone involved with Play on the Pitch 2017. It was a fantastic evening with over 300 people attending and a great game of football between Barclays and the Southend Business Professionals.
We must raise over £100,000 each week to be there for everyone who needs us, helping to control pain and medication, offering respite and caring for adults and children at the end of their lives. Havens Hospices can only exist because of the kindness of our supporters, like Barclays and the Southend Business Professionals who put on these events and continue to raise an incredible amount of money year after year. Together, they’re ‘Making every day count’ for those who need us.”
