Havens Hospices will be holding various Legacy Roadshows and partnering with local solicitors throughout June as part of their Wills Month and encouraging people to write their Wills for a donation to Fair Havens and Little Havens Hospices. Local solicitors will be giving their time and expertise for free to put together in exchange for donations from £80 for single, £140 for mirror Wills.
Jan Martin, a long-time supporter of Havens Hospices, knows the importance of making a Will. In 2016 her brother, David had made plans to make his Will at one of the Havens Hospices Legacy Roadshows last year, but sadly died suddenly before the event.
“David and I have been supporters of Havens Hospices for years as David’s wife Gillian was cared for and died at Fair Havens Hospice. After Gillian died, we both became actively involved with the charity, from taking part in various fundraising events to David volunteering in the Garden Club.
“Last year we heard about Havens Hospices’ Wills Month, David said that he wanted to include Havens Hospices in his Will because the support and care from them was just fantastic throughout Gillian’s illness and afterwards – they had really become an extension of our family. I completely agreed with him, it just seemed natural for them to be included, I said I’d organise the appointment.
“David passed away a couple of days before Wills Month and his final wishes were not in writing because he didn’t have a Will. Thankfully because we’d discussed it I knew what he wanted and following a more complicated probate process I was able to donate a sizable amount of money from David’s estate; I really urge everyone to ensure they’ve made a Will because it really is the easiest way to let loved ones know your wishes and helps eliminate added stress from an already stressful and incredibly sad experience.
“I’m attending one of the Legacy Roadshows this year and I’d really encourage people to get involved with Havens Hospices’ Wills Month and donate their fee to the charity and help the wonderful staff continue ‘Making every day count’ and care for families across Essex for as long as they need.”
