Mark, a keen mountain biker is taking on the Prudential Ride London on July 30th in memory of his friend Richard who was cared for at Fair Havens Hospice at the end of his journey.
Mark met Richard through jive dancing in 2002 and they cemented their friendship through their shared passion for karate. Mark regularly visited Richard when he was staying at Fair Havens Hospice and when Richard sadly passed away in 2013 Mark and Richard’s wife Michelle remained friends.
Mark is taking on the 100 mile road race from Surrey to London alongside four friends and fellow mountain biking enthusiasts, they are all fundraising for Havens Hospices.
“The first charity event I did was the London to Southend bike ride and that was with Richard; in fact all the charity events I’ve taken part in have been with Richard. So when the guys suggested taking on the Prudential Ride London challenge, it felt only right to do it in memory of Richard because then he is still part of it. I’m doing this ride for anyone who has been affected by life-limiting illnesses, but Richard will be foremost in my mind and will be inspiring me to keep going on the day! If he is watching, I know he’ll be laughing his socks off.”
Mark dedicating this ride to Richard and raising money for Fair Havens Hospice is extra special to Michelle Richard’s wife as it is taking place on what would have been their 29th Wedding Anniversary.
“We’ve been friends for so long so I will certainly be cheering Mark on as he takes on this challenge! I am incredibly touched that Mark is doing it in memory of Richard, as I know it’s the sort of challenge he would’ve loved to take on and for it to happen on our wedding anniversary is really lovely.”
