grandmother’s i0 year dedication to children’s charity

29 November 2016

A dedicated Grandmother has raised over £10,000 to help seriously ill children cared for by Little Havens Hospice.

Joan Mottram, 88, from Pitsea has been fundraising for Little Havens Hospice in Thundersley for 10 years and has now surpassed the £10,000 mark. On Friday 25th November she went to Little Havens with her daughter, Michele Leslie, to present a cheque for £1,676 from her fundraising throughout 2016, bringing her donations since 2006 to over £10,700. Joan puts aside £20 each week which she donates straight to Little Havens, which cares for babies, children and teenagers across Essex with life-limiting conditions. In addition, Joan knits items with her friend Peggy Graham, 94, from Basildon which they sell throughout the year to friends and family, helped by her daughter Michele.

On Friday she met Little Havens Care Team members Liz Johnson and Rosie Smith and 11-year-old Tomipe who is cared for by Little Havens, as well as Peter Hall from the Community Fundraising Team.

Joan says,
“I love coming to visit Little Havens before Christmas each year to present them with my donation. They always make me feel so welcome and it’s such a lovely special place to be. Meeting the children and members of the Care Team when I came was such a privilege and it really made my visit even more special to see their smiling faces and to receive such a lovely thank you card from them. I love knitting and fundraising and I will continue to support this wonderful charity for as long as I can. I also want to say thank you to my friend Peggy and my daughter Michele for all their hard work and support too – I really couldn’t do it without their help.”

Peter added,
“I would like to congratulate Joan on her amazing dedication to fundraising and thank her for all the support she has given to Little Havens since 2006. At Little Havens we help by controlling pain and medication, offering respite and caring for children at the end of their lives. All of this care is free of charge and that is only possible because of the commitment of people like Joan to support the charity.”
