On Saturday 23rd April at The Deanes School Thundersley, 28 teams of over 200 eager quizzers turned out for a night of fun in aid of local charity Havens Hospices.
The event was organised by Clips and Pieces Quiz Company which is made up of Simon Foxen, 51, a barbershop owner from Benfleet who regularly supporters Havens Hospices, and Paul Harrod, 49, from Thundersley. In the duo Simon is the ‘Eccentric quizmaster’ while Paul takes the role of ‘Technical genius’ adding interactivity, entertainment and fun to the quiz.
During the event a total of over 200 people took part in seven quiz rounds, a James Bond inspired flake and creme egg eating competition and even danced the ‘The Time Warp’ in a bid to gain extra points. The event has already raised over £2,500 for Havens Hospices, which provides care for babies, children, teenagers and adults with life-limiting illnesses, and once final donations are counted up it is hoped the total may reach £3,000.
Simon Foxen said,
“Havens Hospices helps families when they need them most, and standing on the stage, looking at all the people that had come to support the quiz night to aid Havens, along with the help of staff and pupils of The Deanes School, I must say gave me tears of pride.”
Oscar winner Dame Helen Mirren, Olympic athlete Kriss Akabusi, Rock Legend Wilko Johnson and BBC Essex DJs James Whale and Tony Fisher all sent recorded video messages of good luck to those taking part in the quiz which were played on the night along with recorded video questions.
“I’d like to thank everybody who supported the quiz by taking part, helping with the preparations and sending good luck messages. We also held an auction on the night so I’d like to thank everybody who donated auction lots and of course who bid on the items. Our last lot is still up for auction which is a signed guitar belonging to Wilko Johnson and I look forward to hearing from anyone who would like to make a bid before we close the auction on 14th May.”
The winners on the night were a team called “Forrest Gump’s Parents”.
Sally Bridger, Community Fundraiser for Havens Hospices, said,
“It certainly sounds like the Clips and Pieces Quiz Company’s quiz was something out of the ordinary. I know everybody taking part had great fun. I’d like to thank Simon, Paul and everybody who supported the event for coming together for a great evening of fundraising for their local hospices. We simply couldn’t provide the care we do without the support of the local community.”
