Three days, the Thursday, before my mum died, she was in a semi conscious state ... but very focused on a party ... she was living a dream.
She dictated invitations to Margaret: discussed with me what we were going to have ... little sandwiches, chicken, salmon, cakes and lemonade.
It was to be a garden party to raise money for the 'little children who couldn't have a holiday'.
She raised her head up high and proceeded to make a speech to the gathered guests - 'Mr and Mrs Webb would like to thank you all for coming to the party. We are grateful for all the gifts you brought and for any gifts you might send later. Thank you.'
This was the first and sadly the last time my mum had made a speech.

Harry Edward Webb

My dad's determination to care for my mum before she died, despite his own chronic heart condition, was second to none.
After her death he resolved that he would keep her much loved garden up to scratch.
He was never daunted by the immensity of keeping the grass cut, refusing help with comments such as 'if you do that I'll have nothing to do - but thanks anyway'. What would normally take an afternoon took him three weeks. It was a bit like painting the Forth Railway Bridge - get to one end and start again at the other.
My mum was my dad's life - they were a unique team - as different as chalk and cheese - in many respects a private couple, but in their own way they touched the lives of so many. Family, friends and neighbours alike.
