Doug was a well respected local veterinary surgeon whose career spanned nearly forty years.
In true James Herriot style, he never turned away an animal in need, day or night, disrupting sleep, many Sunday dinners, and even Christmas Day, when he would leave to attend to various pets. His compassion extended to bringing upset clients through the surgery door to the kitchen of his home for a cup of tea with his wife.
On one occasion a party at home was interrupted by a visit from an expectant mum. An emergency caesarean lead to half the party guests dancing in the lounge, whilst the others helped rub the new puppies with towels to help bring them into the World.
As a student at Edinburgh University, he gained his colours for both rugby & running. A superb athlete, he was good enough to compete against the likes of Chris Chattaway & Roger Bannister. He was also an accomplished squash player, but enjoyed all sports, particularly golf.
He was well known for his jovial nature, and would always leave people with a smile on their faces. A life-long Coventry City football fan, he needed a good sense of humour, but one of his favourite memories was their F.A. Cup win in 1987.
He was a man who had no regrets in life. He loved his work, his sport, his social life with many friends, and he adored his family, each new generation bringing further joy, new children to love and watch grow up, and a new audience for his infectious jokes.
He is sadly missed by all who knew him.
