In Patient Unit

The In Patient Unit of Fair Havens Hospice is a ten-bedded specialist hospice care unit, set in a large converted house, very close to the sea in Westcliff with a relaxed and homely atmosphere. The aim of the hospice is to provide specialist and personalised care in a holistic manner to people affected by a life-limiting or life-threatening illness together with their families, carers and friends.

Who we can help

Fair Havens cares for patients who:

  • Live in Southend, Castle Point or Rochford and who are registered with a GP in the area
  • Are living with a life-limiting or life-threatening illness and require symptom control, respite breaks or end of life care
  • Are over the age of 19 years

What we offer

A patient’s length of stay is usually between 7-10 days and could be for one of the following reasons:

Symptom Control - Patients may have physical symptoms proven difficult to control such as pain, nausea or breathlessness. They may also have spiritual or emotional symptoms requiring intervention and support. Medications are sometimes changed to help with specific symptoms and the effects are closely monitored.

Respite - This includes short term relief for carers and is for one week, but patients can be considered for repeat respite care as the need arises.

End of Life Care - Some patients choose not to die at home and the care we provide is supportive and sensitive to the needs of the patient and their loved ones. If you are currently registered on the Preferred Place of Care Document, your admission to Fair Havens should not affect any choice you have already made.

We are unable to provide long-term care and if this need should arise it may be necessary to transfer your place of care to a local nursing home. Alternatively we work closely with Hospice at Home who may be able to provide some care in your own home.
