Student Placements

Havens Hospices is fully committed to supporting student nurses complete their education by offering students the opportunity to experience what it is like to work in the Palliative Care setting.

During a placement students will be able to gain an insight into how we provide care within the following settings:

  • Community Macmillan Team
  • Day Care
  • In Patient Unit (adult or children)
  • Hospice at Home

The types of patients will vary; some will come in for respite care where others may be in for care at the end of their live so the experienced gained will differ for each student nurse. During the placement students will encounter and gain knowledge and comprehension in the following areas:

  • Pain and symptom relief
  • Communication skills
  • Support for the families during illness and in bereavement
  • Ethical issues
  • Integration of psychological spiritual aspects

We consider all requests for a Nurse Placement and the minimum amount of time we currently offer is a four week placement in both Fair Havens Hospice (adults) and Little Havens Children’s Hospice. If you are undertaking a Registered Nurse qualification (Adult of Paediatric) and would like to be considered for a placement, please complete the Student Placement Application Form, e-mail to anneh@havenshospices.org.uk and we will review your request.

Please Note: Due to the emotive nature of our care, there are restrictions on work experience pupils under the age of 16 being placed in our care environments. But there may be other opportunities across the organisation.

If you require any further information about the opportunities for a placement within either hospice, please contact Anne Hughes on 01702 426248 or e-mail anneh@havenshospices.org.uk
