Alan was born in 1941 and has lived in the Rayleigh/Hockley area, Essex, since 1970.
He is married to Mary and they have two daughters, who live locally, and two grandchildren. A devoted West Ham fan - his grandfather was a former manager of the club - he takes a certain pleasure in the fact that he and Mary were married in the church immediately adjacent to the Upton Park ground on a match afternoon in 1964, the year West Ham first won the cup.
Alan was a career Civil Servant, most of it being spent in H.M.Customs and Excise, but with a two year secondment to the container and shipping company, OCL, breaking the government link in mid career. Later, he was Director of IT for ten years and a member of the Board of Customs and Excise.
He retired in 2000 as a Commissioner and Director of Logistics. A member of the Catholic Church in Rayleigh, Havens Hospices has been Alan's first foray into the charity arena. He has been a Trustee for the past four years, during which time he has held the office of Chariman.
His other interests include golf, bowling and gardening.
