Richard was born in July 1947 and now lives in Orsett with his wife Jo.

After university, Richard spent four years at Van Den Burghs and Jurgens in Purfleet developing new dessert products, then onto the Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Food for 28 years until early retirement in November 2003. His responsibilities included EC negations in Brussels on food law harmonisation, Ministry land sales, international relations with Agricultural Ministries worldwide with particular emphasis on socialist, former socialist and other command economies.

Richard decided to take on the role after former voluntary work with St Lukes Hospice. Following his retirement, Richard felt he had more time to devote. His responsibilities include the legal oversight of Havens Christian Hospices, and gradually more active involvement.

Away from the hospice, Richard has three main interests; France, Freemasonry and Food!
